Choosing a fibre cable
First choose the connector needed at each end, then the fibre type to match your installation. LC is the small connector used on SFP and SFP+ transceivers and most new equipment, SC is the larger square push-pull connector found on patch panels and media converters, and ST is the round bayonet connector on older networks.
Multimode or single mode?
Multimode fibre is used for links within a building or campus. OM1 has a 62.5/125 core and OM2, OM3, OM4 and OM5 have a 50/125 core, with OM3 and above laser optimised for 10 Gigabit and faster. Single mode OS2 fibre has a 9/125 core and carries signals over kilometres rather than metres. Multimode and single mode cannot be mixed, and 62.5 and 50 micron multimode should not be joined.
Fibre colours
Jacket colour usually shows the grade: orange for OM1 and OM2, aqua for OM3, aqua or Erika violet for OM4, lime green for OM5 and yellow for OS2. Some of our leads also come in other colours for colour coding, so always check the grade printed on the cable. If you are unsure which you need, call us on 0207 100 6326.
