When is a crossover cable needed?
A crossover cable swaps the send and receive pairs so two similar devices, such as two PCs or two older switches, can be connected without a hub in between. Most equipment made in the last 15 years supports Auto-MDIX and adjusts automatically, so a standard patch cable works too.
Crossover cables are still useful for older network cards, industrial controllers and test equipment. A crossover cable also works with Auto-MDIX devices, so it does no harm if you are not sure. Label crossovers clearly so they do not get mixed up with standard leads.
