Power: 60W, 100W or 240W?
A standard USB C cable carries up to 60W, enough for phones, tablets and most small laptops. Larger laptops charge faster with a 100W cable, and the newest high power laptops and docks use 240W. Cables above 60W contain a small chip, called an e-marker, that tells the charger it is safe to send more power.
Data and video
Charging cables often run data at USB 2.0 speed, 480Mbps, which is fine for syncing a phone. For external SSDs choose a 10Gbps cable, and for docks and USB4 or Thunderbolt laptops a 40Gbps cable. To send video from a laptop to a USB C monitor, choose a cable that supports Alternate Mode.
