Choosing a transceiver
Match the module to the port and the link: SFP for Gigabit, SFP+ for 10 Gigabit and SFP28 for 25 Gigabit. For short runs between racks, a direct attach copper (DAC) cable is the cheapest option. SR and SX modules run over OM3 or OM4 multimode fibre within a building, while LR and LX modules use OS2 single mode fibre for runs up to 10km or more. RJ45 copper modules let a fibre port take a standard network cable.
Many switches only accept modules coded for their own brand, so choose the version compatible with your switch. Generic MSA modules suit switches, NAS units and network cards that accept standard modules. Both ends of a fibre link need the same type of module.
