Single or dual link?
A dual link DVI-D cable carries twice the data of a single link cable, which is needed for monitors above 1920 x 1200, such as 2560 x 1440 and 2560 x 1600 screens, and for 120Hz and 144Hz gaming monitors. It works perfectly with single link screens too, so it is the safe choice if you are not sure.
DVI-D is digital only. A DVI-D plug also fits a DVI-I socket, using its digital signal, but it does not carry the analogue pins needed for a VGA monitor.
